Exciting World War Two script optioned by BAFTA-winner

Screenwriter and copywriter Phil Parker’s multi-award winning World War Two script The Third Bomb has now been optioned by BAFTA-winner Sias Wilson, known for Flying Monsters 3D with David Attenborough (documentary), Hannibal (TV movie), The Golden Bowl (film), Space Race (TV mini-series) and many others. Sias’s experience as a producer, director and writer working with other BAFTA and Emmy-winners leaves him well placed to get this riveting action/ adventure script packaged and financed.

“This is an incredibly well-written World War Two script with strong three-dimensional characters, a well-threaded theme, and action sequences that are both visual and exciting”Black List reader.

“Likely to attract top international talent.” – Tracking-Board.com.

LOGLINEWhen a top U.S. pilot crash-lands on a Japanese island carrying the third atomic bomb, he’s forced to choose between honor and duty: detonate the bomb and annihilate a POW camp, or let the bomb fall into the hands of a disgraced Japanese commander.

“An excellent script. Dialogue smooth and natural. Characters unique, engaging and easy to root for.” – Austin Film Festival reader.

This option contract on The Third Bomb follows on the heels of a six-month shopping agreement, which demonstrates the producer’s passionate belief in the project and is a testament to the encouraging signals he’s already received. The most likely set up will be a co-production to take advantage of tax advantages Phil has an Australian resident, with potential partners from the UK, the US, Australia and Asia being considered.

Any inquires regarding co-production, financing or talent are welcome.

Big Break Competition Update!

21-11-16 UPDATE: The Third Bomb beat out thousands of other scripts to make it to the semifinals.

One of the world’s top 10 screenwriting contests – Final Draft’s Big Break Competition – announced its quarterfinalists earlier this month and my WWII action/ adventure script ‘The Third Bomb’ made the list! Very excited!

All script-writing contest results for The Third Bomb

Normally the quarterfinals are nothing to crow about, but this time is different. Someone from a top Hollywood agency saw my script and read its logline (a brief description of the story) and contacted me. They were intrigued and wanted to read it! #blownaway

So of course I signed their release form and sent that, plus a copy of my script, back right away. Having this agency represent me would be a dream come true… but I’m under no illusions. I’ve already been at this game for a few years now, pitching my heart out, winning competitions and getting script requests, only for it all to lead to dead ends. It’s enough to put grey hairs on your head and a bit of jade in your soul. So, the chickens have not been counted yet.

Not by a long shot.

However, in order to survive, just like in any tough industry, you have to keep pressing on despite the incredible odds against you. Otherwise, what’s the alternative, right? Give up? Go back to a normal 11hrs-a-day industry job working for someone else? F**k that 😉

Besides, I’m already incredibly fortunate that ‘The Third Bomb’ and its success on the contest circuit has helped change my life.

I’m a working screenwriter!

…and that was the whole reason I slaved over that script. So that I could pursue my dream and make it real.

I’m incredibly stressed, but it’s an excited stress, because the long hours and uncertainty about where my next pay check will come from are fuel for my brand, my business, my passion. Not someone else’s.

If you’re chasing the same dream too, keep at it! Keep studying your craft. Keep practicing your craft. Network with other writers. Read tons of scripts and analyze tons of movies/ TV shows.

And do it today. And everyday after that.

Booyah! 😉

Review of ‘The Third Bomb’ on the Black List

This week my feature film screenplay ‘The Third Bomb’ received a great review on the prestigious and well regarded industry website ‘The Black List’ www.blcklst.com. The life of a screenwriter is filled with lots of rejection, so it’s days like this we have to celebrate! For more details on my project go to www.thirdbomb.com. Below is an excerpt from the review:

This is an incredibly well written script with strong and three-dimensional characters, a well threaded theme, and action sequences that are both visual and exciting.

Everything really comes together in this script, from the minor scenes to the overarching theme of doing the right thing vs. following orders. The author did a wonderful job creating sympathetic characters. Mark’s family life is compelling and his scenes at home ground him and make him believable. This means the audience will root for him later. Harry, Kenji, Shiro and Yunmei’s backstories are all incredibly tragic and sympathetic, too. The moment where Harry reminds Mark that Ben doesn’t need a dead hero father is powerful and reminds the audience of the stakes involved for Mark’s emotional journey. His mission is important to him, but he discovers that the lives of his comrades and his family are what’s most essential. Kenji is a great addition because he acts a fulcrum for the plot. Without him, the prisoners would not be able to escape, but his entire storyline is rooted in his innocence. This proves the story’s point that every man is worth saving. Even though Harry’s sacrifice is short lived, his and Kenji’s deaths are incredibly emotional and unexpected. The final image of the bomber submerged in the water is excellent. Great script!”
