I lived in Maryland, USA until I was seven, but from there in on, I was a wandering gypsy – Taipei, Sydney, Tokyo, Austin, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles and now, back to Sydney. I believe it’s this colorful array of life experiences (combined with an extensive education and resume) that makes me a trusted copywriter and storyteller in the eyes of my clients. How better to relate to others through words than to have lived a full life!
I earned my B.A. in the Plan II Liberal Arts Honors Program at The University of Texas in Austin, where I focused my studies on Japanese history, culture and language. My honor’s thesis, entitled “Constitutionalism and Imperialism in Meji Japan” – a study of why Japan went to war in WWII – was awarded the highest grade ever by my professor (who soon after went on to teach at Princeton).
Not ready to settle down or study further, I spent a couple of years exploring life, working as a dancing bartender, a scuba Dive Master, an actor in the Australian Opera, and a pit-broker’s assistant on the bond and option trading floor at the Chicago Board of Trade. It was a fantastic precursor to a life I thought was headed towards business school and an MBA, but when I discovered a passion for storytelling, I realized I’d unwittingly been preparing myself for a much different future.
I signed up for a community college course in creative writing, which I took one night a week after work in Chicago, and it wasn’t long before my teacher told me “your writing is very visual. It would translate really well to the big and small screens.”
That was it! The seed was planted! I now knew what I would do for the rest of my life.
Much to the chagrin of my MBA-loving father, I moved to LA and spent two broke-ass years working on film and commercial crews before I was accepted into the world’s top film school at USC. There, I gained invaluable insights into all facets of film production through hands-on experience and came away with an even more fervent dream of becoming a writer.
For the next 10 years, I worked as a promo producer back in Sydney, Australia for all the major networks, as well as big television brands like The History Channel and The Biography Channel. I eventually became a Creative Producer for BBC Worldwide, writing, editing and producing original short content and promos for their drama, documentary and children’s channels. While at the BBC, I was the proud winner of a Global Excellence Promax Award (the Academy Awards of the marketing/ promo world) for my work on a campaign called Frontline War.
During all this time though, I relentlessly pursued my passion for screenwriting and copywriting, and my determination paid off. I won even more awards as a writer and was able to leave the BBC to become a full-time writer.
I now have a client list of major companies that turn to me for my small business copywriting, blogging, website copywriting, video script and screenwriting work in Sydney and overseas. My ability to use storytelling techniques, in both my copywriting and screenwriting work, attracts clients looking for a storytelling specialist like me. I help them get their message to an eager and waiting audience, and I can help you to!
